ABOUT

BCGPhoenix has worked with books for nearly fifteen years, ranging from conserving old books to constructing entirely new ones from scratch. They've been in fandom for twice as long. When they learned about the fanbinding community -- a group of people who make fine bindings of fanfic for fun -- their reaction was, "holy crap, I can't believe this perfect intersection on the Venn diagram of my interests exists!" And so Ex Cineribus Books was born.As a member of the Renegade Publishing collective, they believe fanfic is its own unique art form worthy of celebration and preservation. Fanbindings are one way to do just that: not only is everything that comes out of their shop crafted with durable, archival-quality materials rated to last for decades, but physical books can't be held hostage to the whims of data servers or company buyouts. Ex Cineribus helps to bring what can feel like an ephemeral craft into the real world. After all, sometimes it's just really nice to hold a book in your hands! You can see their portfolio here, check out their in-progress work at the #ExCineribusBooks hashtag on Mastodon, or find out more about commissioning a binding here.

COMMISSIONS

THE RULES- Fics must be complete and between 30k-150k words. I'm happy to bind shorter works by the same author, but only if they're grouped together anthology-style to hit the 30k minimum; unfortunately, 150k is a hard cutoff at the top end, and I can't bind anything longer than that.- If the work you want bound is not your own, you must get permission from the author first. Take a screenshot of you asking permission and the author granting it; then, either attach it to the Ko-Fi form or email it to [email protected] within 24 hours. No screenshot, no commission. The only exceptions are if you are commissioning a gift for the author and want to keep it a surprise, or if the author has already made a public statement okaying commissioned fanbindings of their work -- in that case, please be sure to note it on the form.- Because of my own DNWs/triggers, there are some works I won't bind. Specifically, if the fic includes noncon or underage, it's better if you get in touch with another fanbinder. I will also only bind A/B/O, RPF, cisswaps, or works with in-depth depictions of self-harm/suicide on a case-by-case basis, and reserve the right to refuse a commission of that type if I'm not up to it. If you're not sure whether I'll take your commission, just email or DM me to check first!- Also, as of April 2022, I will no longer bind any Harry Potter fanfic. No exceptions. Again, I'm happy to help you find a fanbinder who'll take your commission if you're interested in having HP fic bound.- My workflow means I primarily bind fic published on AO3. However, if you'd like something bound that's posted on another site (eg FF.N, Tumblr, Wattpad, etc), I'll be able to bind it as long as you're able to email me the fic in .RTF format.

THE PRICESI believe strongly in the gift economy of fandom and make no profit off any commissions -- these prices (in USD) only cover the cost of materials + domestic shipping via USPS. (International shipping is extra, usually by about $20-30.) While you're always welcome to tip me on Ko-Fi, it will never be a requirement.- 30k-70k words: $35
- 70k-110k words: $40
- 110k-150k words: $45

WHAT YOU GET- A hardcover, handbound book of the fic of your choice, approximately 8.5" x 5.5", in a similar style to other work in my portfolio
- If the fic as posted to AO3 includes art, that will also be in the book, in full color, unless the artist doesn't grant permission. I will ask all artists involved before beginning the commission and let you know ASAP if their work will be included.
Books typically take about 6-8 weeks to complete. If it looks like the work will take longer, I'll email you immediately to let you know.

READY TO COMMISSION?Currently, commissions are CLOSED. They will reopen at some point TBD.
